This chronic neuropathic pain syndrome affects the trigeminal nerve or cranial nerve V, causing extreme, sporadic, sudden burning or shock-like facial pain that lasts anywhere from a few seconds to as long as two minutes per episode. These attacks can occur in quick series or in volleys lasting as long as two hours (Classic - Type 1.). Some patients experience “atypical” clinical presentation (Type 2) characterized by constant aching, burning, stabbing pain of somewhat lower intensity than Type 1. Both forms of pain may occur in the same person; sometimes at the same time. The intensity of pain can be physically and mentally debilitating.
For many decades, patients suffering from this horrific pain syndrome have had to go through the tunnel of medical and/or surgical options with not only just temporary improvement, but also with the ordeal of multiple side effects from medical alternatives and/or residual sensory deficits from the surgical approaches.
Carmen Care Advanced Laser Therapy was originally founded to give hope to the patients looking for a resolution of their TN symptoms. In October 2010 Lee Carmen was diagnosed with TN and experienced such pain making it impossible to participate in her regular academic and sport activities.
